What is the meaning of the mysterious sound ‘Aum’ – by chanting which, one is said to unite with the Divine?

U kaaraah Harih Swayam
M akaraah Bhagavaan Rudrah
A = Sound of Creation; U = Sound of Preservation; M = Sound of Destruction
'Aum' (also pronounced as ' Om ') is the sound vibrating inside and outside all creation. It is a sacred syllable and is identical with the absolute. Hence, in chanting it, you must be careful of its true import.

'Aum' is like the sun, which illumines other planets but is self-effulgent!
In the sanskrit Vedic Hymn above, 'A' signifies the creator Brahma; 'U' signifies the sustainer Vishnu (Hari); and 'M' signifies the destroyer Rudra ( Hara or Shiva) !
In essence the letters signify the elemental sound of primordial creation. By riding through the cosmic vibration of 'Aum' you can be one with the Universal Spirit.
